LJ bookworm friending meme

Whoops, this reminds me that one of my New Year's Resolutions was to read more non-fanfic fiction, which I haven't been doing at all so far. Not because there's anything wrong with fanfic, of course, but more because I feel like over the past year or two I've been missing out on a lot of good fiction by only reading fanfic.

Holiday gift season!

I do love exchanges - they make this time of year at lot of fun, not to mention the huge mountains of fic they generate for us all to enjoy... I still have all of Yuletide and lewis_challenge's Lewis Secret Santa to explore, and Snupin Secret Santa is still posting too.

I want to particularly encourage people to check out the fic and podfic made for me, all of which come heartily recommended.

Due South Seekrit Santa

Why I Lied to You by Queue. This is a long (impressively long!) podfic of one of my own DS stories. I only started listening to podfic this year, and this one is particularly well read, in a great dramatic voice.

Holmes/Watson (ACD)

I doubt tweedisgood needs any introduction for H/W people on my f-list, and I rather felt like I hit the jackpot this year, with two fics and a podfic. The fics were Jubilee, in her inimitable witty style, and Fair Hearts of Finest Glow that rare thing I'm always looking for: great case fic and realism with a dash of slash. And the podfic too, of my own Wintry Morning, Victoria Station! Another great reading... I feel like starting to listen to podfic was one of the best things I did in 2013 :)

Wilby Wonderful

As part of Yuletide I got With You on the Beach of the Sea by busaikko, a beautiful, extraordinarily well-written Duck/Dan story.

And while I'm on the subject of WW, I want to rec another Duck/Dan fic by desireearmfeldt, The Right Place At The Right Time. Another brilliant fic, this time re-imagining the events of the film. [My rather tenuous connection to this fic was just providing the prompt :) ]

Christmas exchanges

Here are the gifts I received in different exchanges this Christmas, all of them definitely worth a look. I always seem to be very lucky in exchanges, actually - I've never got a gift I haven't loved.

An Evening at Home by shadowycat, Snape/Lupin
Gorgeous domestic scene, and I think she perfectly captures the characters as they're described in the books. (It's SFW.)

Six Days to Christmas by dracofiend, Lewis/Hathaway
This was not only exactly the sort of story I love, but really excellent in its own right too, and with a perfect not-quite-happy ending.

After the Wells by elstaplador, Sadler's Wells, Veronica/Sebastian
I'm not sure whether anyone will even be familiar with this rather obscure series of books (in fact, I believe they're out of print). I'm reccing this anyway on the off chance, and because it was absolutely amazing. I felt like I was reading one of the original books.

Fic recs

Here's something that comes highly recommended: The Dance of Plastic Circumstance, one of the best Holmes/Watson fics I've read in a long while. It was my gift in the acd_holmesfest exchange, which has just finished posting. Go read it, it's amazing.

While I'm at it, here's something else I've been meaning to rec for ages: Narcissus by dreamtimegirl. It's a Holmes/Watson ficlet from Holmes' POV, and - well, if Holmes' voice was always written like this, I would be one happy reader!

Holmestice fic recs

holmestice is almost finished posting and I'm feeling rather pleased with myself: I got a wonderful gift this year. It's not only full of everything I love, it's also really very well written (which is just as important, of course, sayeth the pedant). It's a gentle, slow-burning, not-quite-platonic Holmes/Watson.

I've been very lucky twice in a row, actually. Last year's fic by mistyzeo was also one to go back and enjoy again and again.

So go read them!

In other news, the Other Half is in full Holmes/Watson-fic-translating mode, a few steps behind me while I write the thing. He seems to be enjoying himself so far, but he doesn't know about any of the really slashy bits I have planned yet ;D I'm quite looking forward to seeing how he gets on...
